Frequently Asked Questions

Can you write me a programme for an upcoming event/race?

My main objective when coaching an athlete is to help them achieve whatever their goal is. In order to maximise the likelihood of this happening I have found that working together in a collaborative way to be the most effective. Being able to adapt and refine a training programme on an ongoing basis due to the unforeseen changes of everyday life such as work, family, illness, or how an individual responds to different training stimuli allows the athlete to optimize their training time and gain the greatest benefit from all of their their hard work. This can’t be achieved through blindly following a generic training template.

How do you work?

There is no ‘one size fits all’ but generally I will give you detailed workout plans for the next 3-14 days (depending on a variety of factors). This is done a number of ways but most commonly through Training Peaks, which is the World’s number one platform for capturing and monitoring endurance training. You are able to provide feedback after these workouts through uploading data files from workouts and/or providing some qualitative feedback on how the session went. I will review this information as it appears and flex your upcoming training to reflect this.

Do you offer one to one sessions?

Where possible I always aim to see new clients complete at least one workout in your chosen discipline(s) soon after starting work with you. I mainly do this to check your fundamental technique is sound and to help identify any area of weakness that need attention, and it helps with getting to know each other as athlete and coach.

This initial session is complementary and I encourage athletes to make the most of it. If you want to develop any particular area further on a one to one basis then I can help with that too.

My swimming isn’t very good and I need help!

(I get this a lot) I have helped many triathletes from beginners to elite age group winners improve their swim times in triathlon having worked with them on a one to one basis. Even those who have had swimming instruction elsewhere and have felt that they weren’t making any progress have come to me and improved. I coach an open weekly swim session for triathlon swimming for all abilities at Cranleigh Leisure Centre every Thursday from 8-9pm. You are very welcome to come along.

How much contact will I have with you?

I don’t set limits on you contacting me via email, social media or phone with genuine issues, concerns or even just keeping me updated. I do expect you to be proactive in communicating with me at least once per week to let me know how you are progressing and to update me on any issues. Great coaching requires great communication, and it goes both ways.

Can you help me with my nutrition?

I have practiced as an endurance sports nutritionist since 2003 having qualified in Advanced Nutritional Therapy and have worked with athletes from just about every endurance sport you can think of, from running to tennis, from preparing marines on Special Forces selection to motocross endurance riders – and a lot of triathletes! I can assist you whether you are looking for help with your day-to-day nutrition or something more race-specific.

So, how much will it cost?

I charge a monthly rate for my coaching and support service that goes with it. The exact amount varies depending on your needs, location and level of input you want from me. I am very happy to discuss this with you.
